Steam Railway Set in the heart of the Irish sea, off the north west coast of England lies Britain's best kept secret - the Isle of Man. The Island developed a thriving tourist industry and much of the Victorian infrastructure remains, including one of the largest functioning networks of steam and electric railways. Opened in 1874, this narrow gauge railway still runs with its original locomotives and carriages, through an ever changing landscape, to a choice of destinations in the South of the island these include the ancient monastery of Rushen Abbey, the impressive Castle Rushen and a number of sheltered, sandy beaches. The Steam Railway is a truly unique Railway, it's something everyone should experience, each of the lines are in walking distance to the next, allowing you to travel around the south with ease.
The Railway has been granted a new lease of life and is enjoying all the benefits of the largest reinvestment in renewal, improvement and maintenance since the Railway was built. Like the landscape the steam trains have preserved their identity in an ever changing world. Manx Electric Railway Step aboard your tram car at the Manx Electric Railway terminus at Douglas (known as Derby Castle).
Sit back and relax on a 75-minute ride as the spectacular Manx countryside passes slowly by. The Manx Electric Railway hugs the Island's East coast as you pass through leaf filled Glens, gorse topped hills and spectacular coastal scenery as it winds its way northwards towards Laxey and Ramsey. In recent years, the Manx Government has made some significant investments, most of the trackwork being re-laid over the last few winters, ensuring that future generations of residents and visitors will be able to enjoy our unique railway.
